We talked with Anthony Bellenger, Secretary General of the International Federation of Journalists, of which I am a member, which was founded in 1928 and includes 600,000 journalists from different countries of the world, about the situation of journalists in Turkey and the stage the journalism profession has reached recently. Bellenger stated in the interview that there are 4,200 IFJ member journalists in Turkey. On the other hand, he said that many journalists went abroad due to the pressure and economic conditions in Turkey, but they could not achieve full stability there either. You can read our exclusive interview with IFJ Secretary General Anthony Bellenger.
1. Hello. First of all, what would you like to say about the journalists who died in the war in Gaza? What does the International Federation of Journalists plan to do about the deaths of journalists?
AB : The death toll in Gaza is frightening. 70 at the time of writing. My heart goes out to all the victims and their families. I was in Palestine 15 days ago and what I saw was difficult. Probably the worst moment for me since I took over the IFJ.
We are working with our Palestinian union to help Palestinian journalists and we are also preparing the next steps with UNESCO. But in wartime, everything is complicated.
The situation has always been difficult, and thanks to our unions, we continue to defend the rights of journalists in Turkey. At present, we have 4,200 IFJ members in Turkey.
Many Turkish journalists had to leave their country reluctantly. The IFJ helped them when they needed administrative and financial support. But this is not a solution because very often journalists abroad find themselves in a precarious situation and cannot continue to work as journalists.
The situation is very different in different countries around the world. The IFJ is very concerned about the use of digital technology in newsrooms and its impact on working conditions. And on that point, no one is equal.
The IFJ International Press Card has existed since 1928 and is primarily a professional card. The advantage it brings to journalists is that it allows all holders to say that they are journalists, anywhere in the world. And that’s the main thing.
The only advice I can give to journalists in Turkey is to join our member unions, so that they can continue to defend freedom of expression and journalism. Even though I know it’s difficult. But you must never give up because, as an IFJ member, every journalist is supported by one of our 600,000 members around the world!
